Grants Information
The 1772 Foundation does not use traditional, long-term, strategic plans. Instead, the board and staff have used a process over the past decade that relies on internal reviews (interviews and surveys of Trustees) and interviews with subject matter experts. The process typically takes 3-5 months and often results in a modified and refreshed grantmaking plan for the next two years. Oftentimes the research reveals themes, priorities, and opportunities that will enhance the overall historic preservation field.
The 1772 Foundation’s 2025-2026 Grantmaking Plan focuses on advancing historic preservation with a strong emphasis on inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.
SBK (Stewart Barney Kean) Matching Grants
Funds will be used for matching grants supporting exterior restoration work in Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. These grants are available through the partner organizations, select one below for more information.
Historic Properties Redevelopment Programs (HPRP)
Funds will support real estate “revolving funds”, feasibility studies, real estate training, capital investments, and convenings. This program also emphasizes long-term programmatic sustainability and impact.
Legacy/Corrective Action
Grants are made to support partners doing direct work in geographic and topical areas to address systemic racial injustices linked to the foundation’s historical connections to slavery. These grants are by invitation only.
African American History
Grants are dedicated to projects that preserve and tell the stories of African American history, particularly those that are lesser-known or outside traditional historic preservation scopes. These grants are by invitation only.
Dynamic Preservation
Grants are allocated for innovative and progressive preservation efforts, focusing on climate action and community-driven projects. These grants are by invitation only.
The total grant budget for 2025 is nearly $4M, with additional for outside grants, including study travel and discretionary grants. This plan and budget reflect a commitment to dynamic, inclusive, and forward-thinking preservation practices.
